Over thinking is more than just a problem- it is like an addictive disease. It can kill your happiness and your healthy state of mind. In this state, your judgment tends to get cloudy and your stress levels elevate. This way you will indulge in negativity which will make it difficult for you to act. Awareness is the beginning of change.
If you find yourself unable to cope with over-thinking, the first thing you need to do is learn to be aware of the time it occurs to you. Whenever you find yourself doubting your potential, you need to take a step back and take another look at the situation and your response to it. In that instant of consciousness, you will be the seed of the change you wish for.
Don’t think of what can go wrong, but what can go right.
In most cases, overthinking happens as a result of your subconscious mind. The more you focus on bad things, the more they will happen. Everything that happens is based on fear. If you focus on the negative things, they will take over and will be more likely to happen but if you think more positively, better things will come out. So try not paralyzing your thoughts with the thought of failure and instead work towards achieving better so it actually makes you aim for it. Think about the good that can come out and focus on that.
Distract yourself by happiness.
Put all your energy into feeling good. If you can think bad, you can think happy too. Life doesn’t have to be in grays. A lot of bad things happen but it doesn’t mean you dwell on them for extended time periods. It is always useful to nurture the better thoughts and thus live a more positive lifestyle. Do stuff like mediation, dancing and exercise. You can also try learning an instrument or painting to keep the thoughts at a safe distance where they don’t overwhelm you and become a part of who you are.
Put things into perspective.
It is always nicer to turn things into a bigger goal oriented thing. Like think about it in the long term. This would increase their value and make you work towards it to make it last. Similarly, you can also devalue things that hurt you. For example a friendship or a job can be unpleasant so you can tell yourself that it’s only temporary and you are not bound to stick with it forever. If it will not matter in two years, it is probably not worth the worry.
Stop waiting for perfection.
There is never a better time or opportunity. Everytime happens for a reason so stick with your decisions and their outcomes. There is no need to be perfect all the time, it is okay to not be your best self because you couldn’t find the energy to be. If you wait for perfection, you will always keep waiting. You can stop right now. What you are trying to achieve is unrealistic and debilitating.
